Nearly all U.S. insurance providers cover Proton Therapy, as does the U.S. Medicare program. Proton Therapy costs more than conventional radiation, but generally less than surgery or chemotherapy, and often can be delivered over fewer weeks.
Reimbursement rates and coverage for Proton Therapy are also established in Europe (Germany, France, Italy and Czech Republic), Scandinavia (Sweden), the Middle East (Abu Dhabi), China, Korea and Japan.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released its final rules for HOPPS and the PFS for 2010. In the final ruling, 2010 rates for Proton Therapy are up 33 percent for simple and 45 percent for complex; $942 for level I and $1,233 for level II.
